What source would be the best for getting up to speed with the time that Knights of the Old Republic is going to take place in?

I'm thinking of running a campaign of sorts in this time frame, but I don't know too much about it.

I would have thought that the Tales of the Jedi Companion had something, but it doesn't.

I think that there are a few web pages out there, but nothing that I've found that really gives a good chronical. I'll take a look at the stuff that I've found and post it, but nothing REALLY satisfactory.

I got the impression that the creators of KOTOR chose that era for specifically the reason that there was virtually nothing known already. I think they wanted a clean slate to start from, building the world as they saw fit without having to be beholden to existing SW EU lore.

If it's a big success, then I would imagine source material enriching that era will surely appear, but that may be a ways off yet.

Good point.

I was just wondering if there wasn't at least some information surrounding Exar Kun

Heya,

The only details on the Sith War, and Exar Kun really are in the Dark Side sourcebook, Essential Guide to Characters, and of course the orginal comics themselves. The main problem is, the comics aren't very clear how long the whole affair takes. In the TOTJ sourcebook, it lists the ships having really slow hyperdrives, like x7 and x11, taking weeks to get anywhere. But in some cases the comics don't reflect this. The only hard number that is given, is the intro for the SIth War, it says six months have passed since Ulic Qel-Droma fell to the dark side.
So like Bioware, you pretty much have free reign to do what you want.

Free reign being exactly what one thinks that one wants, until one has it :|

Look up Timetales (http://www.theforce.net/timetales/) or Nathan Butler's timeline (http://www.starwarz.com/timeline/home.html) for accounts of the comics, and there are several Old Republic era elements in the starwars.com Databank (http://www.starwars.com/databank/ep0.html).

(Not a clean slate at all, unfortunately, cluttered with a premature interpretation of the Republic and Jedi and Sith that has no place in my SW universe now we have the real thing, but which dominates thousands of years of the EU timeline because Lucas Licensing keeps almost everything in continuity.)

Here are a couple of places that have precis to the comic books. That will give you an outline of what's going on DURING the Sith War, but not really anything beforehand.

The Tales of the Jedi saga, from Knights of the Old Republic through The Redemption of Ulic Qel-Droma is about twelve to fourteen years with a ten year gap between The Sith War and Redemption . According to SW Insider KotOR is going to take place shortly after TSW. Hope that helps.
