It's time to rebuild Starwars-rpg.net. I have two things to put forth.

First, it's time for a new design of the site. I'd like to make this a contest. Evan and I have discussed this in the last month or so and agree it would be a neat idea. Anyway, we'll decide how to run the contest and announce in the next several days what's going on with that. Look for a separate thread on that one.

Second, the hosted sites and the main site both have to rebuild the information that was lost. Here's a list of all hosted sites:

Dark Lords of the Sith (DLOS)
Elrood Sector
Imperial Defense Network
Kurlnova Sector
Legacy of Strife
The Moonswing Chronicles
Servais Sector
Supplement Resource Center
SWRPG Link Archive
SWRPG Reviewed Sites
Toris
Yeager Sector

BOTTOM LINE: I will make only TWO attempts via email to contact the owners of these sites. If you own one of the above sites, POST HERE to get in contact with Evan Hansen, the Starwars-rpg.net webmaster. He'll get you hooked up with a directory and access to upload your site. He'll also help you get a starwars-rpg.net email address (mandatory for all site owners so we can contact you easily).

If you do not have a backup of your site on your local computer, you may be able to salvage much if not all of your recent data by visiting www.webarchive.org. Enter www.starwars-rpg.net in the search box and you will see a list of historical mirrors of the site. Select the most recent one and you will be browsing a copy (possibly incomplete) of the entire site and hosted sites.

Thanks, more soon.

Yo.

Sorry about my lack of presence or even updates to my SW site; life has a way of getting in the way of gaming. :)

I've got my stuff on the hard drive so I'm good...

Chris, I'm reserving this post for you and Servais Sector. Besides liking the campaign setting, I'm using it in my own game, as you know. :P

Hi Guys,

I'm glad to hear things are back on the mend!! Thanks for all your efforts!

I have all of TORIS's files, but the Link Archive and the Reviewed Sites may prove to be a problem. I'll check out this webarchive place to see if they can resolve the issue.

Cheers

Deano

Hi All, just a quick update...

RIGIL: Contact Evan, he'll have your access info for you. You can reach him at webmaster@starwars-rpg.net. He can supply FTP and your new email address information.

NOVA: I've already spoken with Chris regarding Servais. He's working on that now. I too am anxious to see it back alive again!

DEANO: I spoke to Chris Curtis regarding the LA and RS sites, haven't heard back from him regarding any problems so I presume he's able to move forward on those with no problem. I'm very concerned about whether he has a recent backup of the database on either of those, but await to hear that. I would be very upset if that was lost. Otherwise, glad to hear you have TORIS intact for us to enjoy. Contact Evan for details just as I responded to Rigil above.

Thanks all, more soon on the design contest (to be in another thread).

yup- myself as well. It's awful hard to recruit artists for projects without the awe and majesty of starwars-rpg.net :) that's how I roped half the people into contributing art for previous Web Features. They saw the professional work of the site and said "Yup, sign me up!"

Evan, perhaps you can chime in publicly so we have a sense of who's contacted you, what's left to put in place, what irreversible losses have we suffered from the last host and what do we have in place to move on with?

Just something brief like that... ;)

Do you need a host? If so, do get in touch.

Actually, we have located a really great host and are already signed up wtih them, but we appreciate the offer of information.

Thanks,

:: shrugs :: that's ok. It wasn't info I was offering, but actual hosting. But never mind - keep me in mind for another time.

just out of curiosity, I understand that web construction takes a long time... but who exactly is working on this? is it right to say that Evan is the workhorse or is it stretched out between a number of people? Just wondering is all... and will StarWars-RPG.net be 100% done when it re-debuts or will it add more as time goes along and we're simply waiting for the base main page again?

I don't mean to sound impatient, but... well... those hurricanes really screwed up my plans for my Christmas gift to the SW gaming community. :)

I've directed all contact of hosted sites and Journal re-ups to Evan, but haven't heard from him in some time. I assume he's been slammed like the rest of us. I shall contact him today to see if I can get a status.

Thanks,

Hey everybody...

Sorry... I hadn't checked my email in 4 days (a monumental record for me, even for vacations) let alone checked the holonet or other forums.

Here's the full story, so people understand the delays:

In mid-August, our host experienced a meltdown during the first hurricane that hit Florida. They were without power for a while, et cetera. During the course of the several storms that followed, they basically lost all the customer base (and thus all their money), shutting down business for good.

In early August, I'd gotten a massive spyware attack, bought an external hard drive, backed my computer up, and formatted. One problem: I deleted my partition table without first snagging the data that was on my second partition. So I lost lots of photos, music, websites, etc... including the starwars-rpg.net backup I had. (Which, to put some more blame on my shoulders, wasn't as new or as thorough as it should have been...but it was reasonably good.)

So at the same time, both copies of the site were lost.

The gentlemen who ran our previous ISP are being a bit stubborn about getting the data back to me. I *know* they have it, and I *know* the machine it was on is there and functioning perfectly fine. I've even offered to pay them an insane amount of money for the 20-f-ing minutes it'll take them to boot up the server and snag the data as well as paying the cost to ship me a CD with everything on it. Still, no dice.

Soooooooooo...

A number of folks have gotten in touch (DLOS, Moonswing, Legacy, TORIS, and others) and we've gotten them hooked up with FTP access. (That was problematic in and of itself because the ftp address doesn't want to work with the individual sub-domain accounts, just the master account. Problem resolved, but still annoying and time consuming.)

There is an outstanding issue of the subdomains (e.g., moonswing.starwars-rpg.net) not working, which I was really hoping to look into over Thanksgiving and may look into this evening if I can bolt from work early today.

We do, I believe, have a complete backup of the journal. For whatever reason, Scott, Hish, and I managed to think about that right before the hurricanes.

And that's where we're at right now.

So the short answer to some of the questions are:
(1) The "art" part should be back when it pops back up because of the journal backups
(2) It won't be 100% complete when it's back up
(3) We'll do a redesign shortly after
(4) I'm hoping to all hell I can get our original files, especially the databases, back eventually
(5) I REALLY apologize for not being quicker on the replies with the holonet and, for anyone who's mailed me in the past 5-10 days at the webmaster address or my umich.edu address, over email. I spent none of my "vacation" for Thanksgiving actually at my house nor was most of it spent actually vacationing. :-) Not a good excuse for those of you who are waiting on me to get my ass in gear, I know. I've been on the opposite side of that, and I'm quite sorry.

But we'll get it figured out. Seriously. :-)

Well that explains why you haven't emailed me back; should I send a second email just in case?

Sounds like a headache of monstrous proportions, Evan. Good luck on getting everything straightened out.

We're all looking forward to the return of Starwars-rpg.net! ;)

An update on Starwars-rpg.net...

After some trouble with configurations on subdomains, we've now resolved it to where all hosted sites have their particular subdomain. While only three are live at this time since other webmasters have yet to re-up their sites to us, the following is the list of new hosted site addresses...

http://swsrc.starwars-rpg.net/ (live)
http://dlos.starwars-rpg.net/ (live)
http://moonswing.starwars-rpg.net/
http://arcraider.starwars-rpg.net/
http://reviewedsites.starwars-rpg.net/
http://linkarchive.starwars-rpg.net/
http://legacyofstrife.starwars-rpg.net/
http://toris.starwars-rpg.net/
http://servais.starwars-rpg.net/
http://idn.starwars-rpg.net/
http://yeager.starwars-rpg.net/
http://elrood.starwars-rpg.net/

To those webmasters who site has not been re-upped to the new host, please get in contact with either me or Evan and we'll get you set up.

Evan Hansen, Webmaster - webmaster@starwars-rpg.net
Tim "Nealos" Salam - nealos@starwars-rpg.net

Thanks,

Darth,

Contact me at nealos@starwars-rpg.net and I'll get you hooked up with an FTP account so you can upload what you have. That was we can look at it and see if there's data in there we can re-use.

Thanks!
