View Full Version : Light staffs...

Please forgive a poor soul who has no access to a TOTJ book, but could someone give me a good description, game mechanics ect for a light staff. I have only ever seen one in a comic, and have a player wishing to make a staff fighter with one....

The TotJ Sourcebook doesn't actually describe lightstaves.
On the other hand, there are several fanmade stats and rules floating about on the net. Here's my bash at it (for what it's worth).

A lightstaff is basically two lightsabres end-to-end. The two blades can share the same power source, or you can install a seperate power source for each blade (if you think it's necessary). The handle tends to be about 2.25 times the length of a lightsabre handle. Each blade can be ignited seperately, meaning the lightstaff can be used as a normal lightsabre.
From a gameplay point of view, some people consider that Lightstaff should be a different skill from Lightsabre, but putting it under the same skill shouldn't cause any problems (count it as a specialisation). It's your call whether the Force power: Lightsabre Combat should apply to Lightstaves, but i would advise you to allow it.
Here are a few quick and easy (but not too Darksided:p) rules specifically for lightstaff usage: each successful parry allows the user one extra attack, without the -1D reduction due to the extra action. Also, the base difficulty for using a lightstaff is 25 instead of 20 (Very Difficult instead of just Difficult), which means that the user wounds him/herself if their roll is below 15 (failed by 10 points).
Other than that, all the rules that apply to a lightsabre also apply to a lightstaff, once the user has undergone enough training to adapt to the second blade.

Hope this helps.

Sounds fine, you could also include that the lightstaff can be separated into two sabres (not necessarily via someone else's sabre cutting it in two ;) ).

I've seen some rules for the lightstaff either on the SWRPG Resource Library, or SWRPG Network, maybe both. And I agree with what GreenCape and Ronin say, though I'd almost certainly make it a seperate skill, and raise the difficulty for constructing a lightstaff that can seperate into two sabres.

Well, this was not actually wat i was looking for. One of my friends showed me a totj comic, which had within a jedi master who used a staff (quaterstaff style) with a lightsaber on one end. This is what i was looking for, but thanks for the suggestions so far.

Did it look like a normal staff before it was activated? I'm a little confused on what the whole ordeal would look like in the end, but right now I'm picturing some kind of light-glaive, or something to that effect. Maybe if you could remember the TotJ comic you saw it in...

Whatever it is, it sounds interesting, and I'd like to take a look at it myself

Light-staff's etc. have been discusses here before with some people, possibly Lucasfilm, classing the double-bladed lightsabre as a Lightstaff. Personally, well in my game at least, a double-bladed lightsabre is just that. A Light-Staff is what Wolverine is looking for, a pole-arm with a small light-blade at the end.

My Light-Staff stats
Skill to use: Melee for staff; Lightsabre for the light-blade
Difficulty: staff 10; light-blade 20
Damage: Staff (Str +1D); lightblade (3D [+Control in L/S combat])

Correct. I cannot for the life of me remember which comic, but i do remember the scene.. There were 3 maybe 4 jedi fighting against a hoard of robots, and then there was this one old looking guy, who was using what at first i thought was a spear, but 2 frames later, he extinguished the 'blade', which to me suggested a staff with a lightsaber at the end...

One of my PCs constructed something similar although we're calling it a "Sabre Pike" since he used a fighting pike (collapsible quarterstaff) as the basis. The stats we came up with:

Type: Melee weapon
Scale: Character
Skill: Lightsabre, melee weapons
Cost: Unavailable for sale
Difficulty: Difficult
Damage: Lightsabre blade 5D, fighting pike STR+2D (maximum 6D)
Note: This weapon can be used in one of three ways. First, the pike can be retracted and the weapon used as a lightsabre alone. In this case, the damage inflicted is that of the lightsabre alone and the attack roll is that of the character's Lightsabre skill . Second, the sabre blade may remain unlit and the pike extended; in this case, the weapon is treated as an especially dangerous quarterstaff and the Melee Weapons skill is used to attack. Finally, this weapon may be utilized as a mixture of the two with the pike extended and the sabre lit. In this case, the damage inflicted by the weapon and attack rolls MUST alternate between Lightsabre and .Melee Weapons. The fighting pike is of an alloy durable enough to block a lightsabre.

I also have a pretty cool picture of it on my site.

What you saw was a Force staff (i think) the weapon of choice for Exar Kun's master, Master Vodo. He uses the force to give his wooden quarterstaff a real ammount of strenght, so he can parry lightsaber attacks!

The only rule I ever saw about it(I don't have the TotJ sourcebook as well) was in a homemade supplement over the net called "The Force Sourcebook". It was a big .doc file with a whole lot of force data. Unfortunately, I don't know where to find it and I think in got lost im my last HD format...

What I know about that is that a force staff is a real feat, only to be achieved by a legendary Jedi. The difficulty to wield one of thse is heroic and to have enough dice on your force skills to do that is kind of hard... Anyway, I hope this helps...

I realy should start reading those posts before replying... (Dough)

But search for that supplement either way, because there are rules for a lightspear(i think) and that might be what you are looking for
