Allright everybody, I need your help, once more. Our next mission is going to be on Ord Mantell and I'm trying to get some info on the planet the way it would have been during the RoTE era (we're rougthly about 6 months after Episode 1 now, I guess...).

I know it's my own fault, I shouldn't have given my players this planet for their next clue if I didn't know enough about it, but it made sense at the time. So, could you please help a lost GM? Thanks you. :D

Not quite sure... I managed to find some things in the "unofficial SW encyclopedia". It said that it was colonized by corellian colonists some 12 000 years before Endor as a military outpost. But, in other descriptions I got, there are hotels, a store, casinos, and even a story on a land baron who was in control of most of the moisture farm properties on the planet during the last decades of the Old Republic.

It says he killed the existing land barons, so there must have been some colony on the planet before then. Now, what confuses me is that it talks about moisture faming, but in the description of the planet itself, it says it has a temerate environment... :? Aren't moisture farms in the desert like on Tatooine?

If I can't find anything about the planet, I can always have the characters receive a message saying that the person they were after has left Ord Mantell and is heading for somewhere else, but I'd rather avoid it... Boy, that's why I usually make up my own planets, at least I know what they're like and what one can expect there... :D

In Gamer 1 there is a adventure which takes place in Ord Matell, if you have access to it I would suggest getting hold of it. But in a quick break down of the place it is a want-to-be shadowport to some extent. There is a space station, which is where most of the action takes place. On planet there is a whole slew of criminal elements and just plane thugs. Planet side is somewhat harsh with a lot of rock formations (at least where this adventure takes place) so the idea of moisture farming isn't that far removed. It may be a temperate planet but there isn't a lot of water.
It is a planet of fringers, scoundrels, thugs, scouts heading out to bigger and better places and mercenaries. The populace is a wide variety of aliens (about 4 billion or million depending on who you believe) who tend to be a little more on the violent side such as rodians, twi'leks and trandoshans. The little imperial presents would be on the space staion if any.

I know it's my own fault, I shouldn't have given my players this planet for their next clue if I didn't know enough about it, but it made sense at the time.
Don't beat yourself up on this one, even though it is mentioned in several EU books, there is very little RPG stats on the place believe me I have looked and some of them are contradictory.

Depending on what era you are playing, will determine the Gov. It does belong to the New Republic eventually and as I said before there would be a limited imperial presence during Rebellion but probably not during the RotE.

I tend to run it like Tatooine with a space station, an all a round want-to-be attitude and replace the desert with rough terrain (lots of mountains and wilderness areas).

I hope that helps you out.

WEG put out a Solo adventure, (Featuring Han Solo, ha, ha, ha) Basicly a pick you path adventure story, He is on Ord Mantell before Hoth (IE. "The bounty hunters we ran into on Ord Mantell changed my mind!") Anyway the impression i got was that it was a minnig colony, with bad air on a lawless rock. Picture mars from Total Recall. hope this helps.

Well, sounds like it's time for our Jedi or our Force User to have a "vision" of another place to go... :D

I actually thought people lived on the surface of the planet... A space station with lots of thugs and criminals would do just fine for encounters, but it's not the setting I need to start off. So, what planet would still have enough criminals to provide encounters on the streets and make it dangerous enough for heroes, but has a population living on the surface? I know there are plenty, but I gotta think about where it would fit best.

You see, our main villain is at the head of this organization and he has been trying to teach his son (14 y.o.) the tricks of the trade so he can one day take over. In an earlier mission the said son and a few others from the organization escaped emprisonment on Lianna. I since made up a story on how the son has a change of heart and doesn't want to follow in his father's footsteps and ran off to meet his mother and hide. Our heroes intercepted a transmission from his father to some person on Ord Mantell to find him and bring him back so he can teach him what he does to people who don't listen to him.

Heroes decided to go there and see if they can bring down another one of Phoenix's plans down (he destroyed their apartment and his assassin almost killed our wookie with poison, so they have a bone to pick with him. Well, the Jedi doesn't really, she just is along for the ride when trouble comes calling, or when the Council sends her along for her training. But she would like to bring him to justice if they ever find him).
Anyway, I was thinking they would go to Corellia where the message originated first, but they decided for Ord Mantell, so off we go to see if boy is there. I had thought they would meet his mother who would be looking for someone to protect and escort him to Corellia where she has some friends who can help. Only thing is the boy is hiding and even she doesn't know exactly where he is... His only friend there is kidnapped while the heores arrive to his house to ask if he knows anything.

But that's another story... I'm going back to the drawing board and see where else I could tip my players to go... if they take the bait, otherwise we'll stick to Ord Mantell and just make up something there...

Thanks anyway. :)

Didn't mean to mislead you with the space station thing, there are plenty of people/criminals of the planetside (after all there are 4 billion people there). From what I read of your adventure idea, it should work find because there are a lot of places to hide with sufficient people on the planet. The people planetside tend to be the desperate kind without much future.
One of the cities is called Great Rock, a washed up mining town with the only thing really keeping going is the local crimelord (a Bothan going by the name RedEye). In the town is a bar called Qexi's, owned and operated by a Sullstan of the same name. The terrain surrounding the area is filled with quicksand pits, poisonous shrubery and unstable hillsides (requires a DC 15 survival check to avoid).

If I had a character I want to hide I would definently think about that place.

Ord Mantell is depicted in the Shadows of the Empire Computer game, atleast one localle is. The atmosphere is breathable though very likely polluted and people live and work on the barren surface. the impression is of a cooler version of Tatooine.

In the game you see a vast salvage yard done on a Star wars scale with junked walkers and, if I remember right, a significant chunk of a star destroyer. The various heaps of salvagable debris is piled up haphazardly making a series of canyon like structures at the bottom of which are deep streams and pools of intermingling ascidic chemicals and toxic waste.

There is a series of monorail tracks to transport material and personel across the salvage yard. These are guarded by automated droid blaster emplacements and free roaming probe droid like drones.

There must be workers quarters, places for the workers families and some kind of center for commerce.

Not a lot. I know.

I was rooting around the net for SW pictures and found some on Ord Mantell and remembered your query. These are thumbnail-sized pics of two paintings by the Bros. Hildebrandt, who have done a whole lot of SW stuff. The links are:

1. Dash Rides Ord Mantell Hovertrain (http://www.spiderwebart.com/productsd.asp?snob=100966).

2. Dash Battles IG-88 on Ord Mantell (http://www.spiderwebart.com/productsd.asp?snob=100967).

From what the pics show, Ord Mantell looks very frontier (as the others on this thread have explained). Somewhat small pics, I know, but I hope they help (and get to you in time). Have fun with your game!

The planet is also depicted in the young jedi knights book called Return to Ord Mantell or something like that. Also in SWGamer #1 they have an adventure that deals with the planet. And don't forget the Mantellian savrip from WotC Alien Anthology but that doesn't give a depiction of the planet. If you wanted the best source I'd go for the SWG.

Ord Mantell is described somewhat in the NJO book Agents of Chaos I: Hero's Trial. Leia has an amusing conversation with one of the government types there about the local topography that might be useful. Though set in 25 ABY you can probably gather info from there. In ROTE I imagine its pretty much a slightly nicer version of Tatooine. With a different climate.
