Brandl is an intelligent, self motivated individual who was callous and moody even before he was seduced by the Dark Side. Despite this, he found a mate and bore a son, Jaalib, who followed in his father's footsteps as an actor. He broke away from the Emperor's grip eventually, though continued to live out his dark existence without returning to the Light, ever on the run from other Inquisitors, especially High Inquisitor Tremayne who hunted him relentlessly. Brandl even once took on an apprentice, Fable Astin and tricked her into giving to the Dark Side, if only temporarily. It was his intention to bring Astin before the resurrected Emperor on Byss, in order to garner a position in what he thought would be a New Empire. His son, who cared deeply for Astin, rescued her from her father's clutches, who returned to Byss empty-handed. It is unknown what happened to Brandl, though it is assumed that he died when the Galaxy Gun destroyed Byss.
