Question The Force Unleashed Campaign Guide

    Interesting page over at Amazon.

According to the gloss, it seems that we'll finally get our inter-movie setting guide with the coming of Saga Edition (coinciding in release with the same-titled game, natch). Could be fun, I think, and it is good to see the Wiz has a few books in the works to support Saga

    If accurate, good news, no?

Thoughts, opinions (as if I would expect any different...)?

I'm not too interested in the stats, but the 'campaign setting' details sounds nice. And that means more information on the period of history between RotS and ANH, which will hopefully remain somewhat close to canon.

The only disappointing thing about this is that the release date on Amazon is probably wrong - that is, far too optimistic.

I actually expect it to come out about as planned, primarily because it would coincide with the release of the game (if not the same day, IIRC it is currently listed within a week or two).

If it's up to Rodney and Owen, they'll get it out on time. I know Rodney at least is a write-a-holic.

    What I hope for:
-I hope this is about more than just the Jedi. Hero's Guide provided a glimpse into some nifty Force traditions, and I think it's important to remember that there are many, many more beings than just the Jedi that can access the Force and have their own traditions regarding it, from the Gand to the Dathomiri to offshoots of the Jedi like the Jensaarai. Some of those have been covered in the HG and Star Wars Gamer issues, but it'd be great to see some new ones, some of them revisited, and how they're affected by the rise of the Empire. The PC game mentions Felucians, I'm sure we'll see some of those.

-We want clones! We want clones! This might be out of the scope of the sourcebook, especially as much of what happens is still being written by Karen Traviss and others, but what happens to all those clone troopers? When does the switch to storm troopers and enlisted men begin? What happens to the Alpha ARCs? Why isn't cloning more prominent with the Kaminoans still around, and the Emperor having access to all those Spaarti cloning cylinders at Wayland and Byss?

-Bring out the red robes! Let's see some Royal Guardsmen stats and PrCs! There's a wealth of info out there from the comics and various stories about some of the most elite, stylish, and mysterious troops to walk beside the Emperor. Are the Sovereign Protectors of the Republic simply given new robes? Do any of them resent no longer serving an office of state, but only one man? Are they killed?

    What I'm scared of:
-The PC game's production diary describes the core vision of the game as being "over-the-top Force powers". Now, as a tried and convicted power gamer, I should be the last in line to say this... but I'm worried about Jedi becoming even more over-powered. Hopefully the Saga edition core book will make things a little more balanced at the basic level, but what happens when you add on a sourcebook that's all about Force badassness? I hope that this will be handled by making more Jedi powers rather than making current Jedi powers more powerful. (That, or give us epic level rules for Star Wars. Honestly, who thinks the Emperor was level 20? ...have you read the books? ...all of them? ...and the comics? That's what I thought.)

-Cheese factor. Star Wars games have a large amount of cheese in them, with maybe the original Dark Forces being the exception. Video games are very different from RPGs. You're expected to run into lots of non-unique enemies, ones that get sequentially more and more powerful as you yourself get more and more and more powerful, in ridiculous amounts compared to your average NPC. Jedi Knight had some darn cheesy enemies in them. KotOR II had Sith Assassins by the barrel full. I want this RPG setting to feel like a Star Wars story. Not like a Star Wars video game.

    ---
Overall, I've usually been really happy with the Star Wars sourcebooks that have come out. In truth, the successfulness and usefulness of any supplemental sourcebook is only as good as the core rules it works by, so a lot depends on how good the Saga Edition is. Even if they're great, there will still be a lot of people still using d20 RCRB rules for a while, so I'm sure we'll see conversions. As a final, slightly pessimistic note, Lucas Arts is pushing for Force Unleashed games promotions across the board of all Star Wars products, so doing a sourcebook for it might be out of WotC's hands. If so, hopefully Rodney and Owen will take the best of it(like Qui-Gon from Episode I) and ignore the worst(like midichlorians).

The entire plotline for the game would have already had to go through Lucasfilm approval, so the chances that the information was made available to the authors at Wizards is likely very high.

Considering that there have already been two significant plot changes made with Force Unleashed (mainly regarding whether they were going to set it up like Jedi Knight wherein you could choose your path and then which side of the struggle the protagonist would be on), the question is will the game's final arc deviate significantly from the basic scenario originally presented.

I've actually run a Fringe campaign in the pre-ANH era (the Rebellion would have made for easy, brisk business for my erstwhile freelancers, which would have precluded much of my fun) and found that the freedom to employ Imperial assets without having to worry about "what they were up to," in canon liberating.

Personally, the storyline of this game sounds canned and the gameplay even moreso. To me, this is a pretty bad time to try to "redefine" the Force. He should of thought about that thirty years ago when we didn't have a clear picture of what the Force is.

I think I'm one of the few that is actually excited about this game. I think it will open up new possibilities for the entire line of Star Wars.

I also think that the campaign guide for the game has lots of possibilities, for possibly some new force ideas, at the very least, or maybe some new rules and stuff. I mean, I don't want it to get bogged down, but I would like to see some new blood running through the Force's veins.

All in all, I'll at least check it out.

Cool The Holocron Speaks: The Force Unleashed

    ElfWord:
-The PC game's production diary describes the core vision of the game as being "over-the-top Force powers". Now, as a tried and convicted power gamer, I should be the last in line to say this... but I'm worried about Jedi becoming even more over-powered.
Let us not forget also, that unlike other games previously set in the SWU, (Even the alignment variable ones) this is (currently) a Specialist DarkSider adventure. It is not about giving "Jedi" over the top powers. It is about the powers of the Sith Apprentice. Specialists, if you will, in the concept of direct, damaging, horrific application of the Force to one's will.

And who doesn't want to make their campaign Dark-Siders more memorable, more threatening, and more powerful? Gives the players something to shoot at, and something (rightly) to fear.

Or to play. It looks to me like we will probably get/see a rash of sadistic Force-slayers [and games catering to them] shortly after Force Unleashed comes out.

On the other hand, if it hooks people into the RPG... and they end up playing something more... or rather, less, one-dimensional, we should be ok.

In the meantime, I'll trust the authors to put in more stuff [statswise and such] then a guide to breaking things with the Force in an over-the-top manner.

Hmmm... one thing the book description does NOT say is whether the 'adventure content' is for the 'good guys', the 'bad guys', or both. There is always hope!

Of all the sourcebooks I could think of, it's not at the top of my list, but I can see why they're releasing it (tie in with the video game, get new players for the RPG etc).
Still, I'll probably pick it up anyway. As FULONGAMER said; it'll probably give us more powers to make our villians more dangerous and feared by the good PCs. I'll also be getting it purely for stats and locations.
