Default Star Wars: The Old Republic

So, I was checking out Gamespot the other day, and I found this little gem.

    http://www.gamespot.com/news/6199726...=topslot;img;4

So it doesn't look like there will be a KOTOR III, but it seems to me like this will kind of mesh the MMO with the RPG. Sounds like good times to me.

This has been around for a while. I'm still not happy with them and detect a bit too much EA influence in this decision. Ah, well, they won't be getting my money.

I'm still a little bitter and gunshy about a Star Wars MMO after the way Sony handled Galaxies, but I'll probably end up trying it, anyway. Joined their little community the other night...the forums are already filled with complaints.

Meh, I just hope that Commando or some variant (Special Forces/Mandolorain/whatever) is a class option; I really have zero interest in being a Jedi, Bounty Hunter, or smuggler.

I know it was speculated that there was going to be one, but it was never really sure until now.

I'm looking forward to this. I was never a huge fan of Galaxies because of how it was run, but this one just seems like an MMO extension of the KOTOR series. I know that's literally what it is, but I mean how it is focused on story more than anything. That's what I'm looking forward to.

Sony has poorly handled almost all of their MMO properties. The ones that were successful were successful despite that.

BioWare puts out quality work, and LucasArts is involved. It should be a solid game, and I'll give it a whirl since I don't play any MMOs any more. If it's good enough it'll hook me. If not, no skin off my back.

Personally, I will stay with WoW. I absolutely abhored the players' interface for Galaxies, and unless this new MMO has a simplified one like WoW, I won't try it.

Also, I'm a little miffed that a Kotor 3 console game wasn't being worked on instead. I prefer them (SW console games, that is).

After looking at the article in this month's PCGamer, I'm still not impressed.

    *Cassed pops up mysteriously*

I saw the video for The Old Republic, and have known about it for some time, but I'm withholding comment yet. There just isn't enough information, and their video looked just like anything else they would make. No doubt I'll give it a try, but it better be a solid product.

Although there's not much information released on The Old Repuplic, I fear that this will be a game where everyone wants to be Jedi/Sith Force user while other character concepts such as the scoundrel will fall short.

But then again, there isn't enough content out to underline my prejudice. Therefore I'll stay down and keep my eyes on this one, for sure.

I have to say that I'm kind of disappointed that there won't be a third KOTOR as well, but I think that if they can do what they say they're going to do with TOR, then I think it's worth a shot.

And Uron, I think that there's always that possibility with these types of games, especially since Star Wars to most people is all about the Jedi. I think that if Bioware plays its cards right, then there will be plenty of incentives for people to play characters other than Jedi. Of course, there's going to be the kinds of people who just want to play Jedi no matter what, but that's what happens with a game like this.

I personally can't wait for it. I'd always wanted to get into Galaxies, but I felt that it was too WoW-esque to be any fun to me. That's why I'm pretty psyched that Bioware is in charge this time around.

    Just my 2 creds.

From Wookieepedia I see that Galaxies is being shut down in December of this year.
I guess the idea's to encourage/push people over to The Old Republic.

I wonder if private galaxies servers will spring up (heck, they probably already have).

A SWG Emulator has been in development for years since the first botched Combat Upgrade Sony pushed out, but it's still not finished and I doubt it ever will be. Still, for what it's worth, you can check the swgemu.com site if you're interested.

I got the email from SOE about the shutdown Friday afternoon, first email I've gotten from SOE in YEARS since I left in...05, I think. I'm surprised Galaxies even lasted this long; the first combat upgrade was poorly-done and chased away several players, and the NGE drove everyone else I knew in-game away, and they shut down several servers to consolidate players fairly recently, too. Last estimate I heard on their active subscriptions was somewhere well under 10k.

A pity; SWG, in it's original inception, had a great sandbox feel and was wonderful for roleplaying. It needed a lot of fixes, yeah, including combat balancing, but SOE bungled that by not listening to their chosen "alpha" testers (we didn't really test anything; we ended up sitting on a private board on the forums blocked from other members where we would supposedly be giving feedback to the devs as we tested the latest build, but the devs never spoke to us and we were never allowed to alpha anything), then ignoring their testers in the "beta" phase, and routinely lying to and misleading the community.

Eh, looking forward to Old Republic at least; I saw the trooper video the other day, and it looks like commando is getting the massive minigun o' doom that I always wanted on SWG.

Still kinda confused about why commandos seem to have some healing abilties for their party, though...seems more like that should be a separate class to me, or one of the Jedi paths.

I have yet to see anything about TOR that I liked. The art style is way too Prequel-ish, the story is about as unoriginal as any I've ever seen, they completely ruined what could have been a very cool concept in the True Sith, and they limit class/race combinations. I mean, really? Oh, and they included Chiss. Don't get me wrong, I love Chiss--but this is about 4000 years too early for Chiss. Bad enough the references to Mon Calamari and Ubese in TSL, but Chiss is pushing a little too far. And I can't afford to pay monthly for a game anyway. Thanks, I'll just wait for Skyrim.
