Rogue One: Yarr, here be spoilers

Ions ignoring shields is an on-again off-again sort of rule. Sometimes throughout the years in Star Wars, they ignore shields. Other times they don't. It would appear that in Rogue One they don't ignore shields.

Yeah, this is sort of like the shield situation.

Obviously now it's pretty clear that shields are shields, and they're all deflector shields...no more of the "deflector shields dissipate energy, but allow solid, discrete matter through, while particle shields are needed for actual physical projectiles".

One thing I thought was a little silly was the physical shield gate. Sure it provides for a focal point for the action in the space battle, but the rest of the shields in Star Wars do just fine with either a momentary drop of the shields or shifting projectors to allow craft safe passage.

To my recollection, the only other shields near planets that we had ever seen or heard of before are in Empire Strikes Back ("The shield is strong enough to deflect any bombardment." -- "We'll have to land forces... General Veers, prepare your men!") and in Return of the Jedi when they have a shield protecting the 2nd Death Star, but not protecting the rest of the planet. In both cases we never actually SAW the shield, nor did it seem to cover the entire planet, just a smaller area.

So it's entirely possible that a planetary wide shield DOES need some sort of base as a power source or some such.

Alternatively, if you go by the previous EU, in Dark Empire they had a planetary shield where a "window" opened up and ships could fly through. Now that was modestly advanced, and maybe the one around Seraf were slightly older technology...I don't know. As far as on-screen, though, Rogue One has the first planetary-wide shields, so it's very possible that a planet scale shield DOES need a base and an access point for ships to go through.

Perhaps that's what that big ass antenna dish was for. ONE of the projectors for the shields ALONG with a comm dish...

Very possible! They had a big add antenna dish on Endor for the shield that protected the 2nd Death Star, so maybe the one on Seraf was just one of a few scattered around the planet to help project it, and the station in orbit stabilized it, powered it more, and provided a gateway.

I don't recall (been many years since I read that series): did they first drop the outer shield, allow ships in, close it, and then open the inner shield to allow passage?

Or did they open "windows" in "sections" of the shields to allow ships through, as we see in R1?

It was sections, so there were holes in the lower shield to let ships through and holes in the upper shield but in different places so that you couldn't line up a shot to the surface. I think the holes in the lower shield were also to power the upper shield. But there were no shield gates or anything like that. Just holes.
