    Default 580 vs. 720?

If the 720 is the newer, upgraded model, why are the stats for the 580 slightly better? More cargo space, better shields, more hull points, and a turret mounted weapon instead of the fixed forward mount on the 720?

Except for the intangibles of game play (parts being harder to find, more breakdowns, etc.), I don't see the upgrade in the stat block.

Mind you, I'm a big fan of the Ghtroc line- always root for the underdog, and they look much cooler than the YT's

I noticed this problem, too, a while ago. That's why I listed the Ghtroc 580 as one of my favourite freighters. But to clear the problem: Perhaps the 580 is more susceptible to system errors and malfunctions. It might just break down more often as the later 720 as the successor has better engineering qualities, for example. I can also imagine that the 580 might need more fuel than the 720 and thus is much more expensive to maintain etc. It's furthermore possible that spare and repair parts are rare and expensive.

Well, that's how I explained to myself, why the 720 was an improved model. I hope this will help you, too.

Always loved the Ghtroc 580. I just think that the straighter more "boxy" look is better for a cargo carrier.

Besides it has the best "bang for the buck" of any of the common stock ships.

Frankly I wish WEG's had made more ships.

Maybe Wotc will start to use some creative powers.

Stats are probably better in the 580 because the company was going out of business and had to cut corners during the production of the 720.

That's one of the best theories I've heard.

Lightbulb The Fall of Ghtroc Industries

I was reading "Pirates and Privateers" page 68 and found some information on the demise of Ghtroc. In the Ghtroc Cargo Empress capsule, It says:

**After the release of the Ghtroc 720, and its relative success, Ghtroc Industries tried to parlay their toe hold in the market into a foothold with the Cargo Empress-class "super-freighter". The attempt failed and contributed to Ghtroc's eventual bankruptcy.**

If you look at pictures of the Cargo Empress, it looks like a Ghtroc 720 "super-stretch limosine". I think Ghtroc took the front end and back end of a very good frieghter (The 720) and added a center module. This design has two potential problems.
    1. A lack of room for a genuine capital scale power core. They probably linked several 720 power cores in series.
    2. The escape pods in the rear are now hoplessly too far away to reach in a time of emergency.

The Empress was probably noisey, prone to vibration, and hull cracking because of its elongated shape. Its no wonder the model killed the company.

I think the Ghtroc 720 was a very good ship, maybe even better than the YT-1300 save for the YT's ability to be modified.

By the way I am doing Deckplans of the Empiress and will finish them eventually. Keep pestering me, and I'll work faster. I plan to illustrate my theories into the design.

If any of you Ghtroc fans need a Ghtroc 720 to fly around in, just check out my website.

A quote from the D20 Ghtroc Capsule:
Since the ion drives are up front and the hyperdrives are aft, engineering spaces are spread out. It's nice having the subspace engines close to the cockpit in case you need to effect hasty repairs in a fight, but you'll make it up when you have to split your attention between fore and aft when the hyperdrives go, too.
If you look at the attached image, you will see the Merry Thrubidor (Ghtroc 720) flying through real space (STAR WARS Second Editon Revised and Expanded page 182), and a Ghtroc 720 landing on a planet (Platt's Starport Guide page 29). I am of the opinion the Ghtroc 720 has sublight engines in the rear "Tail" area, In fact there are two of them. The "Forward Fins" I believe are for maneuvering, and may augment the Sublight engines in the rear, but are far from the ship's main mode of transportation at sublight speeds. Food for thought.

    Thumbs up Finished!

The Ghtroc Cargo Empress is complete, and my theories regarding its design and its causes for Ghtroc's corporate collapse are discussed in detail. I apologize for taking so long to complete it.

The good old 720, I don’t think I ever had a gaming group that did not own one, even if it was just a replacement vessel. ^^
