  Republic Slave Laws [ post #1 ]

Okay, so Padme hinted on these in Episode 1. My questions are: What Chancellor was responsible for the creation of these Slave Laws that don't really mean much on the Outer Rim? When were they made into law? and who or what lackadaisical organization is responsible for enforcing them?

Well so far the only thing I can find on the Republic's Anti-slavery laws is the Rights Of Sentience clause in the galactic constitution. It was apparently added as a radical reform in 25,053 BBY and was one of the most challenging clauses to put into practice. As for the rest of your question, hopefully somebody else will have better luck.

Did some research and I was only able to come up with the same info that Thomas did.

As far as I know, yeah, slavery was illegal in the old Republic. Whenever a system joined, they had to abide by the Galactic Constitution.

Even under the Empire, technically, slavery was still illegal. However, it was easy for the Empire to work around it, simply by declaring a group to be non-sapient. That's how Wookiees came to be enslaved.

Members of other races may technically not have been slaves, but rather indentured servants whose masters (ie the Hutts) simply didn't pay them enough to let them buy out their contracts.

Also, at the time of Episode I, Tatooine is in Hutt space and not part of the Republic. It wasn't until the Empire expanded the boundaries that Tatooine became subject to Imperial/Republic law.

Even then however, the Hutts were given the leeway to continue running the system has they saw fit, and as long as they continued to line the Emperor's pockets.

Actually, from what I can tell, no. Hutts aren't *technically* allowed to keep slaves. However, they are allowed to keep indentured servants and determine how much to pay them, and how much to charge for room and board and clothes...

So effectively slaves, even though *technically* they're being paid.

And Hutts aren't very concerned with Imperial/Republic technicalities.
